What is inMotion Therapy (Activity-Based Therapy)?
inMotion Therapy (IMT) is for children and adolescents who would benefit from therapy in a more active, movement-friendly space rather than a formal office setting. Our IMT therapists augment traditional principles and methods of relational and directive play therapies to fit with sports to provide for a fun, engaging, and effective therapy experience.
IMT targets sensory and emotional regulation through movement by increasing clients’ bodily awareness during game playing and competition. Our IMT clinicians individualize games and other activities based on each child’s unique interests and motivations. During and across sessions, movement-based metaphors are used to process challenges occurring at home and school. For example, the client experiencing the difference in number of baskets scored after mindfulness and deep breathing is then generalized to the client practicing mindfulness and deep breathing during frustrating or stressful situations such as issues with peers, being redirected by a teacher, taking a quiz, etc. Awareness is the first step, and then individualized activities are utilized to promote skill growth and long-lasting change.
10-12 Week inMotion Therapy Program:
The Activity Based Therapy program is a 10-12 week program that engages both children and their parents. The program systematically combines emotion regulation interventions and play-based therapies, through which children and parents develop an understanding of these concepts and how to implement them in real life situations. The ideal age range for the program is 6-10 years old, though the program can be altered for slightly older and younger children. The inMotion Therapy Program is designed for children in this age range who display anxious and/or impulsive behaviors, but may be generalizable to other skill deficits. Family (parental) engagement is a requirement for this program.
